The field monitoring visit of our LIFE Perdix, conducted by the project monitor Iva Rossi, took place yesterday at the wildlife center of the Carabinieri Forestali in Bieri (LU).

Commander Cecilia Tucci, together with Bieri’s staff, after an affectionate welcome guided us to the “discovery” of the Center and the project actions that are carried out in it.

We started with the breeding pairs, which at this moment are in full spawning both in the ground aviaries and in the cages. It must be emphasized that the daily collection of the eggs, their numbering and cataloging, the insertion in the storage drawers and subsequently in those of the incubator is all done by hand with method, patience and precision.

We then witnessed the candling of a dozen eggs present in the incubator (and one of these no longer had the embryo), to then move on to the hatching room, where it was possible for all of us to see live the chicks just out of the eggs: an incredible emotion!

The new born were counted, strictly by hand, and immediately transferred to the chickens ready with the heating lamps, where they will stay for about 45 days. At this point we headed to the area of the Center dedicated to the first acclimatization aviaries before the individuals of Strana italica are moved to the Mezzano.

It was a very instructive tour, to which the technical-scientific staff of Federcaccia and Ispra also contributed with very precise explanations that helped us to fully understand the actions that are being carried out in Bieri.

In particular, the great ability of the problem solving staff has emerged: thanks to experience and ingenuity, very valid solutions are being tested to make some steps more efficient, such as autumn sowing (alongside spring sowing) in aviaries for first hatches of the season, to ensure that even the first born have an immediately rich and welcoming habitat.

The debriefing was also very instructive, in which the whole partnership had the opportunity to confront each other directly and to discuss together in a very constructive way.
We all go home enriched by this truly intense experience: see you in September at Mezzano!
